This course is mandatory — completion is compulsory before issuance of a Driving Licence in the State of Telangana.

Road accidents are one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in India. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), about 4.5 lakh road accidents were reported across the country in 2024, in which 1,78,000 people lost their lives. Studies show that nearly 80% of these accidents are attributable to “driver error” — a cause that can be significantly reduced through better driver education and awareness.

Recognising the scale of this public safety concern, the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, in its continuing mandamus in S. Rajasekaran v. Union of India [W.P.(C) No. 295 of 2012], has been monitoring the road safety measures taken by States and Union Territories across the country, through the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety. In compliance with the Committee’s instructions, MoRTH has issued a Standard Operating Procedure making completion of the Online Road Safety and Electronic Enforcement module mandatory before issuance of a Driving Licence.

In compliance with these directions, and as part of its continuing commitment to road safety, the Telangana Transport Department has developed this Online Road Safety Course to educate the public on road rules and defensive driving. The objective is simple: to reduce driver error, bring down road accidents and fatalities, and improve the flow of traffic across the State.

What the Course Covers

The course covers 62 essential road rules prescribed under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989, and the Motor Vehicles (Driving) Regulations, 2017, along with practical defensive driving techniques — explained through more than 120 short videos in simple language, easy to follow for people from all walks of life. No formal education is required to complete the course.

Format and Availability

The course is spread across 6 modules of about 25 minutes each, totalling approximately 2.5 hours. It can be accessed on any smartphone, laptop, or tablet with a camera, and completed at your own pace — pausing and resuming as convenient. The course is available in English, Telugu, Hindi, and Urdu.
